The passion and love for nature led Gianfranco Nigi to develop a very ambitious project: organic agriculture.
In fact, the beginning of that bond which proved inseparable between Gianfranco and BIO dates back to 1984. Onceverified the sustainability of organic agriculture in Montespertoli area, it found a result beyond expectations. The intuition was positive, as of someone who plays without a score. Now it was appropriate to put it into practice.
This possibility arose in 2000, when Gianfranco, after consolidating his experience with organic products, decided to create Tenuta Maiano, with the purchase of the first hectares of vineyard land and an olive grove in San Quirico, on the hills. Now the goal was to diversify the production, discovering new "Terroirs". This research leads him to the acquisition of vineyards also in the municipality of Scansano, where he produces the "Morellino di Scansano D.O.C.G." .... continue

Today the company has an area of ​​55 hectares of vineyards and about 4500 olive trees, scattered in a leopard spot over almost the entire Montespertoli's territory. The operational structure is divided into three cellars (two for fermentation and one for storage) and two nuclei for managing the countryside. Thanks to the experience gained, Tenuta Maiano firmly refuses the aid of modern anti-cryptogamic products, fertilizers and chemical herbicides, on the contrary exploits the ancient agricultural techniques of the territory.
These treatments with copper and sulfur-based products, "green manure", organic fertilizers, soil tillage, as well as biological control against various pests are those methods which, although more expensive, allow us to guarantee the consumer a final product more genuine and with an unmistakable flavor."

The Tenuta Maiano logotype, the snail, describes the bond with the earth, stability and security. It represents proceeding in small steps, with constancy and dedication. GIANFRANCO NIGI
Laureato in scienze agrarie, si è dedicato alla libera professione fin dal 1976, con l'aiuto del padre Ilario, agronomo. Porta gli occhiali, ma si pensa che sia solo una copertura: la sua vista gli permette di vedere più lontano degli altri. Non è un caso se le decisioni importanti passano dalla sua supervisione.
Creativo e metodico al tempo stesso, ama le automobili e le app per iPhone. Gli anni passano, ma solo anagraficamente.

MAURO ARANEO
Laureato in Scienze Agrarie, nel 2009 entra in società con Gianfranco e l'azienda cambia radicalmente, sia dal punto di vista tecnologico con la dotazione di nuovi macchinari in cantina ed in campagna, che dal punto di vista strutturale con l'acquisto di nuovi terreni vitati.
Pulizia e ordine non rientrano nel suo mestiere: sono una vera e propria vocazione. Amante del divano e della Wii, gestisce i lavori in campagna con estrema diligenza, ma non disdegna la cantina, soprattutto quando fuori fa freddo.

STEFANO NIGI
Nel 2010 porta una ventata di novità. Laureato in Viticoltura ed Enologia, si interessa alla struttura produttiva, suggerendo nuove metodologie di operatività in cantina al passo coi tempi. Curioso e sperimentatore, vive la cantina mettendosi alla prova ogni giorno.
Naso e bocca sono i suoi veri strumenti di analisi. Le apparecchiature di laboratorio sono solo di corredo.
Puoi chiedergli tutto: ma non di alzarsi presto la mattina.

The territory of Montesperli stretches between hills, steep slopes and narrow valleys. Thanks to the climate and the exposure of the soil,  the area has always been dedicated to the cultivation of vines. With its naturally scenic hill territory, Montespertoli rises to 257m above sea level and has a surface of about 2200 ha. "Wine City" and "Oil City", Montespertoli has built its history on the products of the earth.
The montespertoli's wine production, since the 1997 haevest can also be satisfied with the under-denomination of the  Chianti (Chianti Montesoly DOCG). In recent years, it has been done a big step forward with the start of a project-work, in collaboration with  University of Florence, aimed at creating  a territorial identity of Chianti Montespertoli DOCG ...continue

As Hemingway once wisely said "wine is the condensate of a territory, a culture, a life style"
And the proof of this statement is certainly found in the territories of Scansano. Scansano extends over a supercie of 270 sq km at the northwestern end of the Hills Albegna and Fiora, trespassing in some locations along the Ombrone Valley.
Sea, hills, mountain, the sun that shines for most of the year, makes
the territory of Scansano one of the most generous lands in Italy for high quality wine production.
January 6th 1978, Morellino was recognized the Denomination of Controlled Origin and since 2007 has become D.O.C.G. Today is one of the wines that most attract the attention of critics and consumers. The producion of Tenuta Maiano's Morellino di Scansano extends in Preselle for 15ha.

Organic agriculture is a production method defined and disciplined at Community level by the EC Regulation 834/07, and by the CE 889/08 application Regulation, and at national level by the DM 220/95.

In organic agriculture, no synthetic chemicals are used (fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, pesticides in general), nor Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).

In case of need, for the defense of the crops we intervene with natural plant, animal or mineral substances: plant extracts, useful insects that prey on pests, rock flour or natural minerals to correct the structure and chemical characteristics of the soil and to protect give crops from cryptogams.
If it is necessary to intervene for the defense of crops against pests and other adversities, the farmer can only use the substances of natural origin expressly authorized and detailed by the European Regulation (with the so-called "positive list" criterion).

HOW TO REACH US

Tenuta Maiano is located in Barberinuzzo, about 7 km from Montespertoli.

From the A1 highway (both from Rome and Milan), exit at Firenze Scandicci; take the Firenze-Pisa-Livorno highway (SGC Fi-Pi-Li), direction Pisa and exit at Ginestra Fiorentina.

From the A12 Genova-Livorno highway, exit at Pisa Centro (G. Galilei airport) and continue on the Firenze-Pisa-Livorno highway (SGC Fi-Pi-Li), towards Florence. Exit at Ginestra Fiorentina.
From the Ginestra Fiorentina exit of the SGC FI-PI-LI, follow the signs for Montespertoli through Anselmo and Baccaiano. Near the roundabout, take the second exit and continue for 6.5 km on Via Virginio Nuova until you reach Fornacette. At the stop, turn right and continue along Strada Provinciale Certaldese, going along it for 2 km. At the stop turn left towards Lucardo and after about 1 km turn right (before the Lucardo sign) following the signs.
